Meet Our Specialty Chief Editor: Associate Prof. Yuncheng Deng

Yuncheng Deng is an Associate Professor at the Law School of Shanghai University, China. In the last twelve years, he has served in various capacities, including Research Fellow at the Island Research Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources (State Oceanic Administration) and the South China Sea Institute at Xiamen University, China. His research interests include Marine Resource Policy and Management, Island and Sustainable Development, Ocean and AI, and Ocean Governance.

Deng’s professional experience encompasses roles such as Adjunct Professor, Researcher, Postgraduate Supervisor, Consultant Expert, Deputy Secretary-General, Director, and Member of multiple academic and administrative institutions. Deng has published extensively in both Chinese and English, with nearly a hundred academic papers and newspaper commentaries to his credit. In addition, he has undertaken nearly 40 research projects of various kinds. In addition to his service as an editor for the Journal of Island and Marine Studies, he has also served as a guest editor for several other journals, including International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Island Studies Journal, and Sustainability. He currently serves as the Leading Editor for the book series on Marine Carbon Sinks and Sustainable Development, as well as for the book series on the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Deng fulfills the role of an anonymous reviewer for a considerable number of papers on an annual basis. The primary academic journals with which he is involved include, but are not limited to, the following: A list of relevant journals includes the following: Chinese Journal of Maritime Law, Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health, Discover Oceans, Frontiers in Marine Science, Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences, International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Journal of Chinese Economic and Foreign Trade Studies, Journal of Infrastructure, Policy and Development, Journal of Island and Marine Studies, Marine Policy, Marine Science Bulletin, Ocean Development and Management, Pacific Journal, Science & Technology Review, Sustainable Development, and Sustainable Marine Structures. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for books published by Springer and other prominent publishers.

His primary stance is rooted in an ocean development perspective, which guides his research approach in studying ocean and island issues. Moreover, he advocates sustainable development through win-win cooperation, emphasizing mutual benefits and shared responsibilities among stakeholders.
