Call for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Island and Marine Studies on ‘Developing Resilient Prosperity and Sustainable Islands for the Next Decade’

Guest editors: Yuncheng Deng and Guojie Liang

Islands, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS), face unique and multifaceted challenges in achieving sustainable development. These challenges are exacerbated by their small size, geographic isolation, and vulnerability to external shocks, including climate change, economic fluctuations, and environmental degradation. The pursuit of resilient prosperity is therefore not just a goal but a necessity for these regions.

The Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS) provides a comprehensive framework for addressing these challenges for 2024-2034. ABAS emphasizes the need for financial sustainability, environmental justice, international alliances, and equitable societies. It calls for a holistic approach that integrates economic, social, and environmental dimensions to achieve long-term resilience and prosperity. This special issue of the Journal of Island and Marine Studies aims to build on the ABAS framework and explore innovative solutions and strategies for resilient prosperity in island contexts.

In line with this theme, we welcome submissions on the following topics about islands:

  • Climate resilience and blue finance
  • Economic transformation and sustainability
  • Transboundary pollution and environmental justice
  • Multi-level governance and international alliances
  • International law and due diligence
  • Policy evaluation and case innovation
  • Carbon markets and carbon rights
  • Nature-based solutions strategies and practices

This special issue will be published in the Journal of Island and Marine Studies (JIMS) (http://islandandmarinestudies.press/), but individual papers will be published online once they complete the peer review and editorial process. JIMS is a web-based, freely downloadable, open access, peer reviewed journal that publishes papers advancing and critiquing the study of issues affecting or involving islands and seas.

For further information or if you are interested in submitting a paper, contact the special issue co-editors (see below for contact emails). Manuscripts should be between 1,000 and 9,000 words, including articles, reviews, current developments, short communications, case studies, and must be prepared in accordance with the JIMS submission guidelines: http://islandandmarinestudies.press/guidelines-for-authors/.

Submissions of manuscripts will follow the following two steps: 1) all authors are requested to submit directly to guest editors. The guest editors will provide feedback, ask for revisions if necessary, and reject or recommend formal submission to JIMS; 2) articles recommended by guest editors are formally submitted to JIMS and undergo JIMS’s double-blind reviewing process. This will ensure articles submitted to JIMS have a higher acceptance rate.

All papers will be subject to double-blind peer review. Articles should be submitted electronically to the submission platform (https://ojs.islandandmarinestudies.press/). Manuscripts should follow the JIMS style guide available on our website.

Finally, authors should enter the name of the special section ‘developing resilient prosperity and sustainable islands for the next decade’ in the appropriate place in the submission platform.
